How often are space heaters involved in fires?
CPSC estimates portable heaters, including electric space heaters, are involved in an average of 1,600 fires per year, with an average of 70 deaths and 150 injuries annually from 2020 to 2022. It advises keeping heaters at least three feet from drapes, furniture and bedding, plugging electric heaters directly into a wall outlet, and turning them off when sleeping (CPSC, Jan. 23, 2026 (opens in new tab)).
Was it a defect or misuse?
Whether a heater was misused is often disputed, but a key question is how the heater itself performed. We look at its safety shutoffs, wiring, plug and cord, labeling and warnings, and whether it carried a recognized testing mark. Fire-cause experts may be able to determine how a fire started, even after heavy damage.
What should I do with the heater?
Keep the heater and its cord, plug and outlet area if possible, and don't let anyone discard them before an expert looks.
